Originally started as a solo project, Sonny Dai transformed into a full-fledged band in March 2024 when Calvin joined as bassist. While John handles the songwriting and audio engineering, Calvin has played a vital role in evolving Sonny Dai’s sound and solidifying the group’s identity. "Sonny Dai wouldn’t be able to fully exist without Calvin," says John. "What started as a personal outlet has grown into something much larger, thanks to his contributions." Calvin has recently begun co-writing bass lines as well, earning writing credits from herein.

The band’s music is deeply rooted in personal experiences — a life shaped by isolation, mental health struggles, addiction, and turbulent relationships. These themes laid the foundation for the project’s earlier releases, which served as a catharsis for John’s grief, codependency, and self-doubt. In their first year as a full fledged band, both John and Calvin started opening up to each other, and have shared very similar experiences involving grief, toxic romantic relationships, as well as self-hatred.
